Lesson Planning

Voila provides two complementary AI tools for planning lessons: the Teaching Assistant (general-purpose exercise generator) and AI Lesson Planning (per-student, history-aware planning chat).

Teaching Assistant

The Teaching Assistant generates exercises you can use across multiple students at the same level. When you select a specific student as context, exercises are personalized based on their lesson history.

Generating an Exercise

  1. Go to Lesson Planning → Teaching Assistant.
  2. Optionally select a student context to personalize the output.
  3. Choose:
    • Mode — Listening, Writing, Speaking, or Reading
    • Level — e.g. A2, B1, C1
    • Mechanism — Vocabulary, Grammar, or Pronunciation
    • Exercise type — e.g. ordering food in a restaurant, photo speculation, storytelling
    • Additional instructions — specific grammar topics or custom requirements
  4. Click Generate.

The AI produces a complete exercise you can preview before saving. A listening exercise, for example, may include a transcript, key vocabulary, comprehension questions, and an answer key (hidden by default when inserted into a lesson).

Saving and Organizing Exercises

Save generated exercises into folders you name yourself. Saved exercises can be reused across any lesson or student. Use folders to organize by level, topic, or exercise type.

Personalized Talking Points

The Teaching Assistant can generate conversation starters and talking points based on a student's previous lessons, drawing from past transcriptions.

AI Lesson Planning (Per Student)

Accessible from My Students → [Student Name] → AI Lesson Planning.

This is an AI chat focused on one student. Use it to:

  • Ask for exercise recommendations based on recent lessons
  • Get suggestions for what to focus on in the next session
  • Review what topics have been covered
  • Generate a student-specific Teaching Assistant exercise

The AI draws on the full transcription history and cumulative summary for that student.

Summary Templates

Lesson summaries are automatically generated after each recorded session based on the transcript. You control the format using summary templates.

Default Template

The built-in template includes:

  • New vocabulary introduced
  • Themes covered in the lesson
  • Corrected mistake sentences with brief explanations
  • Suggestions for sentences using the new material

Custom Templates

Create custom templates from Lesson Planning → Summary Templates. For example, a conversation-class template might focus on fluency notes and topic coverage without detailed grammar correction.

Templates can be:

  • Set as the default for a specific student (in per-student settings)
  • Changed per-lesson when creating or entering a session

Previewing Templates

Preview how a template looks by applying it to a past lesson before committing to it.
