Messaging (Students)

The messaging system lets you communicate with your tutor between sessions. Conversations are accessible from the Chat section in the sidebar or header.

Starting a Conversation

A conversation is created automatically when you:

  • Message a tutor from their marketplace profile.
  • Book a lesson with a tutor.
  • Accept a tutor's invitation.

Sending Messages

  • Type and send text messages in real time.
  • Messages update live — no need to refresh.
  • Read receipts show when the tutor has seen your message.

Message Limits

You can send up to 10 unanswered messages to a tutor. This limit resets when the tutor replies. This prevents accidental flooding and ensures your tutor sees each message.

Attachments

Once you have an active tutor relationship, you can send one file per message:

  • Supported formats: images, PDFs, documents
  • Maximum size: 10 MB
  • Files are scanned for malware before the recipient can download them

In the Exploring state (before activating the relationship), messaging is text-only.

Inline Booking and Payment Cards

The chat includes inline cards for:

  • Booking confirmations — when your booking is confirmed or declined
  • Package purchases — when you buy a session package
  • Recurring schedule proposals — when your tutor proposes a recurring arrangement

These cards show status and actions directly in the conversation.

Email Notifications

If enabled in your notification preferences, you receive an email alert for new messages with a preview and link to the conversation. Configure this in Settings.

If a Tutor Is on Vacation

When a tutor has vacation mode enabled:

  • If you have an existing relationship, you can still send messages.
  • You receive an automatic vacation auto-reply.
  • If you do not have an existing relationship, you see a vacation notice and cannot start a new conversation until they return.
