Messaging (Tutors)

The messaging system lets you communicate with students between sessions. Conversations are accessible from the Chat section in the sidebar or header.

Starting a Conversation

Conversations are created automatically when:

  • A student messages you from your marketplace profile.
  • A student books a lesson with you.
  • You invite a student and they accept.

You can also open a conversation directly from a student's profile in My Students.

Sending Messages

  • Type and send text messages in real time.
  • Messages update live — no need to refresh the page.
  • Read receipts show when the other person has seen your message.

Attachments

Once you have an active student relationship, you can send one file per message:

  • Supported formats: images, PDFs, documents
  • Maximum size: 10 MB
  • Files are scanned for malware before the recipient can download them

Without an active relationship (i.e. exploring state), messaging is text-only.

Booking and Payment Cards

The chat includes inline cards for:

  • Booking requests — when a student requests a lesson, a card appears with details and confirm/decline actions.
  • Package purchases — when a student buys a session package.
  • Recurring schedule proposals — when setting up recurring lessons.

These cards let you take action directly from the conversation without navigating away.

Student Message Limits

Students can send up to 10 unanswered messages to you. This limit resets when you reply. The limit prevents spam while allowing natural conversation flow.

Blocking a Student

If you need to stop communication with a student:

  1. Open the conversation.
  2. Block the user from the conversation menu.

Blocked users see that communication is disabled. Past messages remain visible to both sides. You can unblock from the same menu.

Vacation Mode

When Vacation Mode is enabled:

  • New students cannot start conversations with you and see a vacation notice.
  • Existing students can still message you.
  • They receive an automatic vacation auto-reply.

Email Notifications

If enabled in your notification preferences, you receive an email alert for new messages with a preview and link to the conversation. Configure this in Settings.
